Fixes

  • Fixed a security issue that could expose sensitive information through shortcode injection.
This release brings the first batch of performance improvements for WooCommerce stores that have many products and product variations.

We’re already working on a second batch of improvements and will release them soon.

WooCommerce Performance Explained

WooCommerce products contain a lot of internal data that standard posts and pages don’t have.

For your store to work correctly, WPML needs to synchronize all this data across every language and product variation:
  • For example, the price needs to be consistent in all languages.
  • Or, when you sell an item, stock levels go down in all languages, no matter which one the clients use.
And there is much more data like this within products.

The challenge: It’s not possible to exclude certain product data from synchronization because it’s essential for store functionality.

What happens: When you activate WPML and WooCommerce Multilingual, your site starts managing multiple languages and synchronizing extensive product data, requiring additional processing.

The result: Because a multilingual store simply needs to process more information, it will always require more server resources compared to a single-language store.

What we’re doing: Our goal in this and future releases is to handle product data as efficiently as possible. While a multilingual site can never exactly match the performance of a single-language site, we’re working hard to minimize the added processing.

Faster Editing and Translating for WooCommerce Products

In this release, WPML becomes faster in four aspects of working with product data.

The following table summarizes the performance improvements we’ve observed in our tests:

Performed actionMeasured speed improvementWhat we did
Saving and updating products16 – 30%Optimized mechanisms for saving product taxonomy and meta information
Sending a product to translation10 – 30%Improved product data validation and implemented better caching for product attachments
Receiving translated products27 – 35%Implemented a more efficient mechanism for synchronizing all types of product information
Duplicating products40 – 53%Optimized the process for generating translation job data

We present these improvements as ranges because the results depend on your specific site setup.

How to Speed Up Your WooCommerce Site Now

As usual, we’re rolling out this release gradually. However, you can update your site manually right away:

  1. In your site’s admin, go to PluginsAdd New Plugin and click the Commercial tab
  2. Click to check for updates
  3. WPML 4.7.2 and WooCommerce Multilingual 5.4.2 will appear on the list and you can update your site to them

We just released WPML 4.7.1, an update that fixes several bugs. However, if your site has 29 or more languages, you should wait for WPML 4.7.2, which we plan to release next week.

What’s Included in WPML 4.7.1

This update includes fixes for:

  • A fatal error that appeared when updating the WPML core plugin before String Translation and WooCommerce Multilingual, which locked users out of their sites
  • A compatibility issue with PSR/Log 3.0 plugins (e.g., Rollbar) that caused WP-CLI commands to fail
  • A PHP 8.1.23 deprecated notice related to rawurlencode()
  • A PHP 8.1 fatal error caused by registering a string without a text domain or having an invalid database entry
See WPML 4.7 in action for a quick overview of what’s new:

New Translation Dashboard for Smarter Workflow

We completely revamped the Translation Dashboard which is now the only screen you need to translate your entire site.
Easily send any content for translation including posts, pages, WooCommerce products, forms, widgets, and any other type.
Before selecting how you want to translate your content, you now also get an estimate on the wordcount. Everything is simple and at a glance!

The top of the Translation Dashboard page will now also show you the detailed status of your translations and guide you in case your attention is required for anything.

Easy Theme & Plugin String Translations

We vastly simplified how you translate texts (strings) that are outside regular content and come from plugins and themes. You only need to follow two simple steps:

  1. Visit your site’s frontend in a secondary language and find the page with the untranslated texts (strings). WPML will autodetect them and make them available for translation.
Visit a page on the frontend in a secondary language for WPML to autodetect untranslated strings

  1. Find the Other texts (Strings) section on the Translation Dashboard and select the Frontend (viewed) filter. This displays all the texts that WPML identified when you visited the frontend. You can safely send all these untranslated texts for translation.

And that’s it! You no longer need to hunt for strings. WPML does this work for you and shows you the strings you need, directly on the Translation Dashboard.

Enhancements for Advanced Translation Editor

WPML 4.7 also brings major improvements to the Advanced Translation Editor, making it more intuitive and user-friendly.

Smarter segmentation – WPML now displays paragraphs together for a more natural translation flow. If you prefer, you can still revert to sentence-based segmentation.

Translating paragraphs as one single segment for better context and easier work
Content is grouped like in WordPress – The Advanced Translation Editor now mirrors the layout of the WordPress editor, keeping content in the same order with familiar labels. This makes translating structured content—like pages built with Elementor, SEO metadata from Yoast, and forms—easier than ever.

Fields from popular plugins like ACF and Yoast SEO are now grouped together for better context and easy translation

New Feature – Automatic Glossary Retranslation!

Updating your WPML Glossary now comes with an added benefit: WPML can automatically retranslate all affected content, ensuring consistency across your site without extra effort.

At launch, Glossary Retranslation is free to use but comes with temporary usage limits to maintain system stability. Soon, these limits will be lifted, and a small fee will be introduced to cover system costs.

Seamless Integration with Major WordPress Plugins

WPML 4.7 enhances compatibility with popular WordPress plugins, ensuring a smoother translation experience across your site. Our team made sure all WPML add-ons take full advantage of the new features.

Alongside WPML 4.7, we’ve released updates to key WPML compatibility add-ons, including:

  • WooCommerce Multilingual 5.4.0
  • ACF Multilingual 2.1.5
  • WPML SEO 2.1.1
  • CF7 Multilingual 1.3.2
Make sure to update all WPML compatibility add-ons that your site is using.

We just released WPML 4.6.15 to address a critical compatibility issue with Elementor 3.26 which is scheduled to be released on December 16th.

If you update Elementor to version 3.26 before updating WPML to 4.6.15, your site will encounter a fatal PHP error and experience severe issues:

  • Elementor editor crashes – making it impossible to edit pages
  • Frontend errors on pages with a language switcher, showing “Critical error on this website.”
This issue occurs for both the free and premium versions of Elementor and is caused by a deprecated class that Elementor is removing from its code.

How to Keep Your Site Running Smoothly

To ensure smooth operation of your site, follow these steps:

  1. Update WPML to version 4.6.15 first
  2. Then, update Elementor to version 3.26
